"Mental Illness is as elegantly dark as a wrought-iron gate," — Uncut, May 2017

"Mental Illness wallows in its troubles, and it's an exquisite wallow." — The New York Times, March 29, 2017

Aimee Mann's first solo studio album in five years. After originally breaking onto the music scene during the '80s leading the post-new wave pop group 'Til Tuesday, Aimee Mann has gone on to establish herself as one of the most distinguished singer-songwriters of her generation. Her successful solo career has spanned several decades with several Grammy nominations, one Grammy award and the release of seven critically acclaimed solo albums, including the profoundly popular soundtrack for the film "Magnolia," which garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Song in 2000.

After a swerve toward rowdier, pushier rock on the 2014 album she made with Ted Leo in a duo called the Both, she doubles down on both the quiet and the desperation on Mental Illness, writes The New York Times. Instead of worrying about stereotyping herself, she exults in it. Mental Illness is mood music for a single intractable mood: a lingering doldrums, a daylong drizzle under gray, overcast skies.

Time Magazine has said, "Mann has the same skill that great tunesmiths like McCartney and Neil Young have: the knack for writing simple, beautiful, instantly engaging songs, " while NPR voted her one of the "TOP 10 Best Living Songwriters" along with Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen.
