Recorded live at Crystal Ballroom, Portland, Oregon and Great American Music Hall, San Francisco, California on January 21 & 24, 2001.
"...The guitarist's electric snake-charming remains best heard live, making this collection essential..." — Rating: B+ — Entertainment Weekly, Nov. 9, 2001
"...Cheaper than a plane ticket to Memphis and a ride across the state line...this is undoubtedly worth the cost of admission." — Living Blues, January-February 2002
Mississippi blues guitarist/singer R.L. Burnside was born near Oxford, Mississippi, on November 23, 1926. Burnside is simply a force of nature. His raw, driving style seems as effortless as it is infectious. Here, he's captured in his most effective format — live performance. Accompanied only by grandson Cedric Burnside on drums and disciple Kenny Brown on second guitar, R.L. tears the house down on this record with his stomping — literally and figuratively — electric sound.
R.L.'s breakthrough came in the 1992 film documentary "Deep Blues," which led to his signing to Fat Possum Records when he was already in his 60s. Hip figures such as Jon Spencer and Beck producer Tom Rothrock broadened the guitarist/singer's popularity through a succession of albums. Purists should revel in this live album Burnside on Burnside, which was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Blues Album. Recorded on a West Coast tour in the winter of 2001, Burnside on Burnside finds the late Mississippi musician in Portland and San Francisco, backed only by second guitarist Kenny Brown and drummer Cedric Burnside, Burnside's grandson. Reviewer Ted Drozdowski says Burnside's all-alone performances of "Walking Blues" and "Bad Luck and Trouble" "reveal every nuance of his caw-to-keen singing and the sweet way his slide slices right to the emotional core of a lyric."
