No Stones album split critical opinion as much as their stab at psychedelia. Uncut magazine concluded that although the record has long been derided as the Stones’ misguided attempt to outdo the Beatles, it is, in fact, “a neglected psychedelic masterpiece” and “superior to Sgt. Pepper as a document of that first British summer of love.” It featured their most innovative arrangements, which incorporated African rhythms and full orchestration.
