The band here was absolutely extraordinary, which alongside Davis included John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley on saxophone, Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly on piano and the outstanding rhythm section of Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums.

Davis would later sum the sessions up this way, "That was my gift, having the ability to put certain guys together that would create a chemistry and then letting them go; letting them play what they knew, and above it."
