Originally recorded in 1989 and issued in 1990, The Last Recording is just that, the final offering from Vladimir Horowitz, a man considered by many to be the greatest pianist of the 20th century. The 11-song swan song was recorded in the living room of Horowitz's Upper East Side Manhattan town house with longtime producer Thomas Frost as was the case with his 1989 recording Horowitz at Home. The Last Recording is commenced with a reading of Haydn's piano sonata in E-flat, followed by several Chopin selections that span a mazurka, nocturne, two etudes, and the Fantasie-Impromptu, and ends ceremoniously with two works by Liszt, including the fitting yet eerie closing piece, "Liebestod" ("Love-Death"), a piano transcription of an aria from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde.
