Television were among the vanguard of NYC’s ‘70s punk movement — in fact, the band’s Tom Verlaine convinced the management at CBGB to regularly book live music, branding the club as the scene’s epicenter. Driven by Verlaine’s unique songwriting and vocals and his and Richard Lloyd’s guitars — dual layers of slashing hooks and cathartic riffs — Television’s music was starkly spare but structurally complex, emotionally without pretense but blazing with punk angst. As Marquee Moon’s liner notes observe, “Television proved you could strip away rock ‘n’ roll’s excesses without sounding primitive or old-fashioned.”
