In September 1985, four of the greatest musicians of the 20th Century returned to the studio in Memphis where it all began: Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash went back to Sam Phillips' Sun Records Studio to record an ode to Elvis Presley and the city they all loved. It was their stated goal "to reassert the vitality of their art outside the often stifling definitions of the music industry and to reassert the vitality of Memphis as a music-making center of great potential."

Like Presley, all four music legends originally recorded for producer Sam Phillips at the Sun Records Studio on Union Avenue. Out of a small 18-by-30 foot room they created a new music called rockabilly that blured both musical and racial divisions. Songs such as Lewis's "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," Perkin's "Blue Suede Shoes," Orbison's "Ooby Dooby" and Cash's "I Walk The Line" helped spark a revolution in popular music that was echoed in other American cities throughout the mid-1950s.

Memphis Rock & Roll Homecoming, with its mix of jazz, blues, country, gospel, rock 'n' roll and soul, is now a proud part of the legendary city's legacy!
