Composed between June 1899 and April 1901, Symphony No.4 premiered in Munich in November of 1901. As with all Mahler's works, the light and dark themes emerge from folk tunes and receive large colourful orchestrations. With the soprano solo adding warmth and lyricism to the finale, this work has long been a favourite of listeners.
