Deutsche Grammophon is celebrating its 100th birthday. And while corks are popping, what better occasion is there to go into the archive, search out a few of the precious magnetic tapes and commit the recording to black, shiny vinyl. Having satisfied CD buyers with an extensive special edition at the turn of the year, attention is now being turned towards the LP buyer. The choice certainly wasn't easy, but this release is now part of three outstanding LPs from three decades of stereo recordings on the unsurpassed Yellow Label. The recording of the symphonic poem Ein Heldenleben with the Berlin Philharmonic has made history: it was Herbert von Karajan's very first stereo recording for Deutsche Grammophon. Insiders know that the extraordinary quality of this production was responsible for the artist's lifelong commitment to the company.
